Koi really are not suited to tanks. They need large well maintained ponds.

Of course if you had a large well maintained pond goldfish and Koi would co-exist.

The thing is, Koi grow extremely large and in order to keep even one in an aquarium it would need to be 1,000 plus gallons. However, Common, Comets, Shubunkins and all torpedo shaped Goldfish can live happily with Koi. Just in a large pond is all.

EDIT: Honestly, if you want to put Koi in a 50 gallon tank, go right ahead, but it surely is NOT going to be happy. As I said before, Koi need large ponds or a tank at least 1,000 gallons.

Technically yes. Howevevr depending on the type of koi you are planning on getting, koi can range from 12-36 inches. a 10 gallon or even a 20 gallon will not work for the life of the koi. When it comes to tanking koi you need a shallow wide tank vs. a standard tank. You can for the first year or two keep him in a regular tank however he will need to eventually either go into a pond or into a short wide 50 gallon. Remember koi live over 200 years so stunting is not a possiablity here.

Koi do NOT need 1000 gallons each to live happy healthy lives
